Can I really build a website myself?

What is HTML? Is it hard to learn and is it hard to build a website myself? Well, I guess that all depends on how much time, effort and money you have. Building a website should not be an overnight project. If you have been browsing the Internet you have most likely come across websites that are eye-catching, interesting and popular. On the contrary there also websites that are dull and contain no character to encourage you to read any further. So building a website in a sense is not so hard, you should however focus on building a good website. Here we give you an introduction to what you may need to build a website and hopefully see that building a website does not have to be a difficult task.

Firstly you need to know what HTML is. HTML is the abbreviation for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the universal language that all Internet browsers can recognise, decipher and are then able to present the information in the form of a web page.

The HTML language consists of codes. For example, <b> means to make the words bolded and <i> means to highlight the words chosen in italics. Initially, coding of the HTML language may be quite confusing to the new website owner, however with learning and experience, as with anything else in this world, it would soon become an easy task for you to get a grip of. Many website developers use to use raw HTML to build websites. There are a few other solutions you can look at such as software, website builders and templates to help smooth out the process.

Web Programming software such as Dreamweaver, and Microsoft FrontPage can be used to help you build a website in an easier way with less effort. These software programs allow you to edit and design web pages like you would a word document that is, you can simply cut and paste and move images and words around to suit your likings. The only downfall is that these software programs can cost a few hundred dollars, so without that money upfront you may need to look at other options.

Another option is to use a website builder. You can download some website builders for free on the Internet. If you require a web hosting company to host your website, then you are probably happy to know than many companies now provide their clients with online website builders. These website builders are easy to use and also work as if you were working with a word document.

Another benefit of signing up with some web hosting companies is that the web host also provide thousands of templates for you to choose from to use for your website. These templates are both professional looking and range to serve all types of websites. They also include everything you may need for your website, such as the layout files, image files and logos.

If all this comes as too much trouble or too hard for you to comprehend then your last resort would be hire a professional web developer to do the whole job from start to end. Web developers are quite expensive and you would have to consider if the cost involved would weigh up against the value the website can bring to you. Remember if you allow a website developer to complete the job and don’t take any time learning the basics, you are at the mercy of the web developer and have no real control over your. Another cheaper option would be to hire a freelancer who can help you parts of the setting up process. The trick is to learn some HTML yourself though. This can allow you to have control over your website in such cases where you may want to update some information or change a picture or icon and do not need to rely on someone else.

In a nutshell, I believe that if you are going to create your own website then you should consider learning some basic HTML and building it yourself. Learning HTML is not at all hard if you are determines. There are many online guides to teach you HTML and you might later find that it is quite an interesting language to learn. In addition, signing up to a reliable web hosting company with website building features and templates would also be of benefit to you, making your website building experience much easier.

Building A Website That Works For You

These days building a website can be done easily with the immense amount of software or tools. Once upon a time, people use to dread making a website because of the amount of technical knowledge required. People will dread HTML codes, Javacripts to name a few and this really kept people away from having their own website. Now powerful softwares can make anyone a great website designer. But if you want to build a website that works for you, there are certain key issues that you need to focus on.

Choose a Good Title

These might seem unimportant to most people but this is the first thing that your human visitors as well as search engines look for. Write a short sentence for your title. Having one or two words really doesn’t tell much about your website. If you are stuck about thinking for a good title, go to Google Keywords. It is a free tool to use. Choosing a high traffic phrase for your title can mean more visitors to your website. Alternatively, take some time to think of a good title for your website.

Research on Your Website Topic

Taking some time to research on your website topic can work wonders for you in the long run. Be sure about what you want to write about. This is especially important when you have a blog on your website. You need to decide what your blog or website is about. If your website is about weight loss, make sure you know enough about weight loss before building a website. Doing some reading about weight loss reading weight loss blogs are some examples you can do before adding content to your website. Mind you, do not plagiarize!

Keyword Research

You might have heard this before but keyword research must not be underestimated this days. Having good keywords in our website can help promote traffic and boost your search engine rankings. Building a website using non specific keywords may be alright for you and your human visitors but not to search engines. Search engines are constantly looking for new content based on specific keywords. Again using the Google keyword tool can help you decide which are good high traffic keywords.

Monetize Your Website

I am sure you must have heard of this. Monetizing your website basically means making money with your website. One way is to join an affiliate program. An affiliate program basically means you earn a commission for each product you sell for others. The best and easiest place to start choosing products as an affiliate is Clickbank. You can also monetize your website by adding Google Adsense to your website. Google Adsense helps you earn when someone clicks on a Google sponsored link located on your website.

Drive traffic to your website

I have explained certain things about driving traffic to your website above but there is a lot more to driving traffic than it can be explained in this entire article. To make this as brief as possible, I’m not going to discuss the details of driving traffic. Some simple things you can do is to write articles and submit them to article directories, participate in blog discussions and forums and leave your links or forum signatures there. Join social networking programs and add links or content that lead back to your website. Pay-per-click advertising is also another excellent way to drive traffic.

Conclusion

Most websites don’t get traffic and don’t earn any money unless done in the right way. If you were to follow the simple instructions noted above, you are on your way to building a website that works for you.

Wishing You Success,

Bryan Wong YH

How to Build a Website? Ten Things You will Need to Build a Successful Website

So you have decided that you absolutely need a website. Before you dive in, I would like to share with you ten things you would need to know on how to build a website, in order to ensure the success of your website project.

How to Build a Website Item #1.

A website address (or URL): Your website address is the location at which customers will find you. Ideally, you will want to use your business name. (yourbusinessname.com). If your name is not available, then try using keywords that relate to your business. For example, a lawyer in New York might use NewYorkLawyer.com. Ensure that your web address is easy to remember. If your web address is something that is commonly misspelled, be sure to purchase the URL for the misspelling of the address as well.

How to Build a Website Item #2.

Web hosting: In order for your files to be live on the internet, you will need a web host. A website is comprised of files, and a web host is able to make those files live on the internet by hosting them on a web server. Look for a web host that provides 24-hour support.

How to Build a Website Item #3.

A plan: You need a plan before getting started. It’s important to understand the goal of your website and your expectations in order to get there. Trust me it, it will save you a lot of time and money.

How to Build a Website Item #4.

Logo: Do you have a business logo? If you don’t, it’s time to make one. A logo is one of the ways to brand your business, and should be used on all of your marketing materials so your customers will recognize it.

How to Build a Website Item #5.

Images: Images help to tell a story as well as help you communicate with your target market. You can either use stock images or your own images. If you are a photographer, wedding planner, interior designer, or are in a visual industry, you’ll want to use your own images. If not, you’ll want to select stock images that will powerfully relay your message.

How to Build a Website Item #6.

Website content/text: Your website needs to look good, but it also needs to get your message across. The content of your website should do two things. 1) Sell your products and services/communicate your message. 2) Be search engine friendly by including keywords that are relevant to your business. If you are a bakery in Boston, and your prospect is searching for “bakery in Boston,” keyword rich web content will help these prospects find your site. A professional copywriter can write content that both communicates your message and is search engine friendly.

How to Build a Website Item #7.

Professional website design: What would a website be without a beautiful design? There are many designers to choose from. However, not all website designers are created equal. Pay attention to the web designer’s portfolio to review the professionalism of their work. In addition, see how helpful they are in answering your questions and giving you the information you need to make a well informed decision.

How to Build a Website Item #8.

Content Management System: If you plan on updating information to your website on a regular basis, then you will need a content management system that allows you to make changes to your website on your own, without having to go back to the designer. Most businesses out there won’t need a CMS, but if you are a large online retailer or have ambitious growth plans, then considering a CMS might be a good idea. It will make your website updates much easier and more streamlined.

How to Build a Website Item #9.

Blog: Blogs are an amazing way to build a long-term relationship with your prospects and customers. Blogs are truly interactive and are updated frequently, so it gives you a great forum for interacting with the very people that will buy your products and services. It’s also a great way to build your list for frequent email communications. If you are interested in starting a dialogue with your target market then adding a blog to your website is a great idea.  It’s also a great tool that will help bolster your search engine optimization efforts.

How to Build a Website Item #10.

Commitment to marketing: If you build it, they won’t necessarily come- unless you commit yourself to marketing. It’s important to build it well, stay committed to keeping the information accurate, and know that marketing is going to be of utmost importance if you want your site to generate leads and bring results to your business.

How to Build a Website from Scratch

For someone who has never created a website before, the task of actually building a website from scratch and then getting that website on the Internet and listed in the major search engines must seem like a daunting task.  In this article, how to build a website from scratch, we’ll look at the essential building blocks of any website and then discuss some of the options that new website developers have when constructing their very first website.

Every website that appears on the World Wide Web consists of three things that make it an actual website.  Each website whether it is built from scratch or not consists of a domain name, web hosting, and some web based language that allows the web site to be viewed by visitors in their different web browsers.  Each of these essential elements must be understood by any beginning web developer so that they can learn how to build a website from scratch.

Domain Names

Domain names are purchased or registered at a domain name registrar. Two popular domain name registrars are GoDaddy and Network Solutions.  These webites allow visitors to register domain names and these sites also provide services that can help any novice webmaster turn their domain name into an actual website. One of these services is the ability to assign web hosting to a given domain in the user’s account at the registrar.  This brings us to the second essential building block of any website and that is web hosting.

Web Hosting

Web hosting is the process that allows the website you build from scratch to become a unique, viewable location on the World Wide Web.  Without hosting, visitors would never be able to see your website. Beginners need to do two things when it comes to web hosting.  The first is to select a web hosting company and the second is to inform your domain which hosting company it is assigned to.  Some top website hosting companies are BlueHost and Hostmonster so just sticking with either of these is a good way to begin.  This second step may be the most confusing for the novice website builder. This second step is called assigning nameservers or setting your domain nameservers. The process itself is relatively simple. Once you have chosen your web hosting company and told them you would like web hosting for your domain, they provide you their nameserver information.  It is then necessary to go back to the domain name registrar and set the nameservers by typing in the nameserver information provided by your web host when you update your DNS..

Building the Website

This is probably the one area where beginners are most likely to become a little overwhelmed.  Websites may be built using any number of web based programming languages.  They may be hand coded in HTML or constructed by using a website building editor like FrontPage or Dreamweaver. While learning HTML and building websites from scratch is certainly a good way to learn exactly how HTML works, this is very time consuming for beginners and there is a large learning curve. For most beginners, using a tool such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver is the best way to go, although there is somewhat of a learning curve when learning either of these tools, as well. Another option beginners have now when building their own website from scratch is to use software that will actually guide through the website building process, such as Site-Build-It.  This software will help beginners with registering domain names, will provide the hosting, and comes equipped with point and click functionality that allows anyone to quickly create web pages without learning the intricacies of web based programming languages or even tolls, such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver. That’s all there is to it. Building a website is not difficult once you understand what each of the essential building blocks are and how they all work together.
