Creating effective Web designs through the use of Grids

Creating effective Web designs through the use of Grids

Mathematics is often closely related to the arts. Unfortunately many people are under the impression that structure and method will limit creative expression when in reality the two often compliment one another.

In Web Design, mathematical principles such as grids can aid the designer during the creative process. Using grids for arranging layout types and structuring content is a well-known method that is gaining popularity in the field of web design.
Intentional design plays an important role in Web Development and in this article we look at the benefits of grid systems and the effective use there-of in design.

What is a grid?
In basic terms, the grid is a system used for aligning visual objects on a framework of regularly spaced vertical and horizontal lines. Grids enable designers to find an initial visual platform for the layout and design of graphical elements on a page.

Using grids in Web Design:
In web design, functionality and aesthetics go hand-in-hand. One of the advantages of using a Grid-system during the design process is that it creates visual balance, enhancing the overall appeal of your site.
As with any other art form, mastering the usage of the Grid is something that requires both time and practice.

The benefits of grid-based Web Design:
Grids are useful for rationalising nonsensical visual content and if used properly it can enhance site-usability and impact. If the appearance of your website is accessible and appealing to online users, very little will prevent them from using your website as a platform for decision-making. Listed below are some of the benefits related to the use of grid design:
•    Using grids will help you to think relational about the different elements on your page.
•    It introduces systematic thinking into the creative process.
•    Grids will prevent you from isolating elements in your design –forcing you to come up with a solution that will work as whole.
•    The grid functions as a valuable reference point from where you can exercise better control over your design as a whole.

Why Web Design is a Must for a Small Business

For a small business, one big challenge in order to penetrate the online market is to weather the stiff competition on hand.  Thus to catch the attention of potential clients or customers to navigate a small business’ web site, the kind of web design employed plays a significant role.

The web site, aimed at improving the marketing strategy, should be interesting enough to make sure that the products or services offered by a business or company will be widely known in the World Wide Web. To stay afloat in a highly competitive business avenue online, creativity in marketing strategies is crucial for a small business. Web design techniques can also be of great help in making the site more interesting to generate more traffic. You should bear in mind those higher hits on the site means having more potential customers to get back.

Relevant and sufficient information should be posted on the web site. Leaving your readers clueless after visiting the web site is as good as publishing an empty website. Thus, content and creativity should be consistently merged in this field. Thus it is important to consider the interplay of content and creativity.

For a small business with resource limitations, investing heavily on web site maintenance is not a good idea. Since the internet can function as an effective tool  in boosting up popularity, and eventually profits, the costs of maintaining web sites does not always equate to an extravagant investment. You can take the route of hiring the services of a web design company which offers quality work at affordable rates. There is a wrong notion that seeking the services of a web design company  is costly and impractical. However, some web design companies can offer affordable rates catering to a small business.

In ensuring that you will have a very interesting web site that will serve as one of the marketing tools of the business, using Joomla and the many Joomla components can also help. It is a widely known content management system ensuring a friendly interface even for an amateur web designer. Joomla can ease the task in putting in the necessary content of the web site for your small business.  The good thing is that it does not require a stiff learning curve since expertise in web development is not a prerequisite and you yourself can make the installation. Joomla can ease site management tasks as well as editing tasks. With Joomla you  can post content on yourwebsite without the trouble of getting other people to do it for you. Running a web site online does not always come with a high tag price- the key ingredients are creativity and resourcefulness.

How to Build a Website? Ten Things You will Need to Build a Successful Website

So you have decided that you absolutely need a website. Before you dive in, I would like to share with you ten things you would need to know on how to build a website, in order to ensure the success of your website project.

How to Build a Website Item #1.

A website address (or URL): Your website address is the location at which customers will find you. Ideally, you will want to use your business name. (yourbusinessname.com). If your name is not available, then try using keywords that relate to your business. For example, a lawyer in New York might use NewYorkLawyer.com. Ensure that your web address is easy to remember. If your web address is something that is commonly misspelled, be sure to purchase the URL for the misspelling of the address as well.

How to Build a Website Item #2.

Web hosting: In order for your files to be live on the internet, you will need a web host. A website is comprised of files, and a web host is able to make those files live on the internet by hosting them on a web server. Look for a web host that provides 24-hour support.

How to Build a Website Item #3.

A plan: You need a plan before getting started. It’s important to understand the goal of your website and your expectations in order to get there. Trust me it, it will save you a lot of time and money.

How to Build a Website Item #4.

Logo: Do you have a business logo? If you don’t, it’s time to make one. A logo is one of the ways to brand your business, and should be used on all of your marketing materials so your customers will recognize it.

How to Build a Website Item #5.

Images: Images help to tell a story as well as help you communicate with your target market. You can either use stock images or your own images. If you are a photographer, wedding planner, interior designer, or are in a visual industry, you’ll want to use your own images. If not, you’ll want to select stock images that will powerfully relay your message.

How to Build a Website Item #6.

Website content/text: Your website needs to look good, but it also needs to get your message across. The content of your website should do two things. 1) Sell your products and services/communicate your message. 2) Be search engine friendly by including keywords that are relevant to your business. If you are a bakery in Boston, and your prospect is searching for “bakery in Boston,” keyword rich web content will help these prospects find your site. A professional copywriter can write content that both communicates your message and is search engine friendly.

How to Build a Website Item #7.

Professional website design: What would a website be without a beautiful design? There are many designers to choose from. However, not all website designers are created equal. Pay attention to the web designer’s portfolio to review the professionalism of their work. In addition, see how helpful they are in answering your questions and giving you the information you need to make a well informed decision.

How to Build a Website Item #8.

Content Management System: If you plan on updating information to your website on a regular basis, then you will need a content management system that allows you to make changes to your website on your own, without having to go back to the designer. Most businesses out there won’t need a CMS, but if you are a large online retailer or have ambitious growth plans, then considering a CMS might be a good idea. It will make your website updates much easier and more streamlined.

How to Build a Website Item #9.

Blog: Blogs are an amazing way to build a long-term relationship with your prospects and customers. Blogs are truly interactive and are updated frequently, so it gives you a great forum for interacting with the very people that will buy your products and services. It’s also a great way to build your list for frequent email communications. If you are interested in starting a dialogue with your target market then adding a blog to your website is a great idea.  It’s also a great tool that will help bolster your search engine optimization efforts.

How to Build a Website Item #10.

Commitment to marketing: If you build it, they won’t necessarily come- unless you commit yourself to marketing. It’s important to build it well, stay committed to keeping the information accurate, and know that marketing is going to be of utmost importance if you want your site to generate leads and bring results to your business.

How to Build a Website from Scratch

For someone who has never created a website before, the task of actually building a website from scratch and then getting that website on the Internet and listed in the major search engines must seem like a daunting task.  In this article, how to build a website from scratch, we’ll look at the essential building blocks of any website and then discuss some of the options that new website developers have when constructing their very first website.

Every website that appears on the World Wide Web consists of three things that make it an actual website.  Each website whether it is built from scratch or not consists of a domain name, web hosting, and some web based language that allows the web site to be viewed by visitors in their different web browsers.  Each of these essential elements must be understood by any beginning web developer so that they can learn how to build a website from scratch.

Domain Names

Domain names are purchased or registered at a domain name registrar. Two popular domain name registrars are GoDaddy and Network Solutions.  These webites allow visitors to register domain names and these sites also provide services that can help any novice webmaster turn their domain name into an actual website. One of these services is the ability to assign web hosting to a given domain in the user’s account at the registrar.  This brings us to the second essential building block of any website and that is web hosting.

Web Hosting

Web hosting is the process that allows the website you build from scratch to become a unique, viewable location on the World Wide Web.  Without hosting, visitors would never be able to see your website. Beginners need to do two things when it comes to web hosting.  The first is to select a web hosting company and the second is to inform your domain which hosting company it is assigned to.  Some top website hosting companies are BlueHost and Hostmonster so just sticking with either of these is a good way to begin.  This second step may be the most confusing for the novice website builder. This second step is called assigning nameservers or setting your domain nameservers. The process itself is relatively simple. Once you have chosen your web hosting company and told them you would like web hosting for your domain, they provide you their nameserver information.  It is then necessary to go back to the domain name registrar and set the nameservers by typing in the nameserver information provided by your web host when you update your DNS..

Building the Website

This is probably the one area where beginners are most likely to become a little overwhelmed.  Websites may be built using any number of web based programming languages.  They may be hand coded in HTML or constructed by using a website building editor like FrontPage or Dreamweaver. While learning HTML and building websites from scratch is certainly a good way to learn exactly how HTML works, this is very time consuming for beginners and there is a large learning curve. For most beginners, using a tool such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver is the best way to go, although there is somewhat of a learning curve when learning either of these tools, as well. Another option beginners have now when building their own website from scratch is to use software that will actually guide through the website building process, such as Site-Build-It.  This software will help beginners with registering domain names, will provide the hosting, and comes equipped with point and click functionality that allows anyone to quickly create web pages without learning the intricacies of web based programming languages or even tolls, such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver. That’s all there is to it. Building a website is not difficult once you understand what each of the essential building blocks are and how they all work together.
